Creating and managing custom channel mappings
Create custom channel mappings in Usermaven to categorize traffic your way, overriding or supplementing our default channel mapping rules for more granular insights. This guide covers how to access, create, and manage them.
Accessing the channel mapping settings
Access custom channel settings via Settings > Workspace Settings > Setup > Channel Mapping. This page lists your existing custom channels, their priority, and conditions.
Creating a new custom channel
Follow these steps to define a new custom channel:
- On the Channel Mapping page, click the ”+ Add a Custom Channel” button.
- Name your channel: Use a descriptive, alphanumeric name (spaces allowed), e.g., “Paid Branded Search.” This name will appear in your reports.
- Set conditions: Define rules for traffic categorization based on these parameters:
- Condition Type (Where):
- UTM Source: The
utm_source
parameter (origin of traffic). - UTM Medium: The
utm_medium
parameter (general traffic category). - UTM Campaign: The
utm_campaign
parameter (specific marketing initiatives). - Page URL: The landing page URL.
- Referrer: The referring website URL.
- UTM Source: The
- Operator: Choose how to compare the data point with your value (e.g., “is,” “contains,” “matches regex”).
- Value: Enter the text or pattern to match.
- Multiple Conditions:
- Criteria within a single rule group use AND logic (all must be true).
- Use the ”+ OR” button for separate condition groups (traffic matches if any OR-connected group’s conditions are met).
- Example: For specific partner referrals:
Referrer
contains
partner-site.com
ANDUTM Medium
is not
cpc
.
- Condition Type (Where):
- Save the channel: Click “Add Channel” or “Save.” Your new channel will be added to the list.
Managing custom channels: Priority, editing, and deleting
Manage the evaluation order and make changes to your channels:
- Channel priority: Custom channels are processed before defaults and are evaluated top-to-bottom from your list. The highest matching custom channel in priority gets the attribution. Drag and drop channels to reorder their priority.
- Editing a channel: Modify a channel’s name or conditions by clicking its “edit” icon.
- Deleting a channel: Remove a channel using its “delete” or “remove” icon.
Using custom channels in your analysis
Once active, custom channels appear in your Usermaven analytics:
- Viewing Data: See traffic attributed to your custom channels in web analytics reports (e.g., traffic acquisition or source/medium reports).
- Filtering and Segmentation: Use custom channels as dimensions for filtering and segmenting data in funnels, attribution reports, and user cohort analyses to understand behavior specific to these channels.
Conclusion
Custom channel mappings in Usermaven let you tailor traffic analysis for precise insights and better marketing decisions. Combine this with understanding Usermaven’s default channel logic for comprehensive tracking.
